Warren baseball drops its 4th straight

Warren’s baseball team is 3-6 in Region 5 after its second two-run loss in two days on Friday, falling 5-3 to visiting Fort LeBoeuf at Old Legion Field.

RBI hits by seniors Paul Smith and JT Blum — who finished with two hits and two RBIs — pulled Warren to within two in the bottom of the seventh, but LeBoeuf was playing ahead all day and a strikeout ended the game with the bases loaded.

“This one was about missed opportunities,” said Warren coach Andrew Morrison. “We left too many guys on base and made a couple of key errors. We hit the ball hard for outs quite a few times and LeBoeuf played just about a perfect game on defense.”

Warren committed three errors on defense to LeBoeuf’s none. In fact, Fort LeBoeuf made it 5-1 in the top of the sixth on a two-out, two-run Warren error.

“Dip (Eric Dippold) and Aidan (Zdarko) pitched well and gave us a chance to win,” said Morrison. “Again, as sophomores, they have stepped up and done a great job.”

A similar story played out on Thursday when sophomore starting pitcher Brady Berdine took a no-hitter into the sixth inning of a 2-0 loss at Erie High. He didn’t give up an earned run in the loss and has a 0.879 ERA on the season.

“This was a pitchers’ duel from the get-go,” said Morrison. “Brady pitched a phenomenal game again. We are asking a lot of him as a sophomore and he’s done nothing but deliver. He is giving us a chance to win every time he gets the ball. We didn’t take advantage in this case. (Jose) Quinones is one of the best pitchers in the area, but we watched too many fastball strikes again. We need to improve our approach at the plate and that starts with me as a coach.

“I still fully believe we are a playoff baseball team,” added Morrison. “We just need to start putting complete games together. We have games where we hit well and games where we pitch and defend well, but we have only had maybe one game where we’ve done all three. I believe in these guys and we are going to keep plugging away.”

Starting at $3.50/week.
