Huskies take down Warren in Dragons’ third game in three days

HARBORCREEK — Warren ran out of gas at Harbor Creek on Wednesday in its third game in three days to open the season, falling 18-3 in three innings.

The Huskies picked up where they left off last season in an 11-1 District 10 4A playoff victory over Warren, scoring 13 runs in the bottom of the first inning this time.

Warren actually led 3-0 after the top of the first. Eric Dippold, Owen Blum and Paul Smith knocked in runs, but nothing could overcome eight walks allowed and four Dragon errors.

“We need to find a way to get the ball in the strike zone more consistently,” said Warren coach Andrew Morrison, whose Dragons are 1-2 in Region 5. Harbor Creek is 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the region.

Neither starting pitcher Ben Sowa or Dippold could finish the first inning. Only one of Owen Blum’s five runs over two innings was earned.

“We have walked 20 batters in the last two games and that is completely unacceptable,” said Morrison. “Credit to Harbor Creek, they were able to use the walks and the environment to their advantage with the two grand slams and a three-run homer. I think fatigue set in a little bit with us today, but we need to be stronger mentally if we want to be a playoff team in this region.”

Warren had five hits in three innings.

“Offensively, we continue to put good at-bats together and make good swing choices,” said Morrison. “We will keep working and put this one behind us. We do not plan on experiencing another game like this.”

Starting at $4.00/week.
