Warren falls into second-place tie

Kruszewski leads Harbor Creek past Dragons on Saturday evening

Earlier this season, Warren’s boys basketball team used a big second quarter to beat region-rival Harbor Creek.

On Saturday, the Huskies returned the favor. Harbor Creek outscored Warren 17-8 in the second en route to a 60-47 Region 5 win at Warren Area High School.

The win ties Harbor Creek with Warren at 8-2 in the region standings, one game behind first-place Fairview.

“When you beat a good team the first time through region play, you have to be prepared and pay attention to the details,” said Warren coach Jeff Berdine. “I’m not sure we were as sharp as we needed to be, coming off of not being able to practice for a couple days, and it hurt us early.”

Travis Kruszewski scored 3 points for Harbor Creek in Warren’s win on Jan. 11. This time, Kruszewski scored 6 of the Huskies’ 17 second-quarter points and had 19 for the game.

Logan Breese hit a 3-pointer in each of the first three quarters, finishing with 11 points.

Offensively, Parks Ordiway finished with 18 points, Tommy Nyquist 17 and JT Blum 12 — for all of Warren’s scoring.

Harbor Creek leading scorers in senior point guard Jaden Rocco and Nick Krahe were again held slightly below their season averages with 12 and 7 points, respectively, but the Huskies’ contributed elsewhere.

“As a group, I don’t think we feel we played as well as what we’re capable and I think as a group we are a little disappointed,” added Berdine, “but we’ll go back to work this week with two big games on the horizon when it comes to playoff seeding.”

In a 46-34 junior varsity win for Warren, Konnor Hoffman had 13 points, Jack Darling 12, Brady Berdine 11 and Braylon Barnes 10.
