Jayhawks place 2nd at Regionals

Photo courtesy of JCC Athletics The Jamestown Community College Jayhawks girl swimming & diving team took second place at the NJCAA Region 3 Championships on Sunday.

ROCHESTER — In the third and final day of the 2022 NJCAA Region 3 Swimming & Diving Championships, the Jamestown Community College women’s swimming & diving finished second with a point total of 527. Of the 64 events the Jayhawks competed in 55 of them were personal best swims.

“We had a great regular season,” Jayhawks head coach Todd Conklin said about both swim teams. “I can’t be more proud of how my girls and guys swam.”

The Jayhawks continue to rewrite the record books as Jenna Fiebiger (Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa/Fourways HS) set a new meet record in the 50 yard butterfly with a time of 29.61. Jade Vidas (Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa/Parktown HS for Girls) placed third with a time of 30.83 while Shannen Stein (Olean, NY/Portville Central) placed fourth in the event with a new best of 31.29.

Stein also placed first in the 200 yard backstroke with a new best of 2:36.98. Fiebiger also placed second in the event with a new best of 2:42.93.

Kylee Hennessy (Warren, PA/Warren Area HS) placed second in the 50 yard butterfly with a time of 36.29 while Emily Lyon (Panama, NY/Panama Central) placed third in the 200 yard breaststroke with a new personal best with a time of 3:13.56. Tia Moppert (Gowanda, NY/Gowanda HS) also placed third in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 58.88.

The team of Moppert, Stein, Fiebiger, and Kaylee Constantino (Frewsburg, NY/Frewsburg HS) set a new school record in the 400 yard freestyle with a time of 4:00.66.

The Jayhawks will be off until they make the trip to Fort Pierce, FL for the 2022 NJCAA Swimming & Diving Championships from March 2-5.

“They stepped up,” Conklin said about both teams. “There’s nowhere to hold their heads other than up. Now we just refocus to really let it rip at the national meet in two weeks.”

JAYHAWKS PLACE THIRD

ROCHESTER — In the third and final day of the 2022 NJCAA Region 3 Swimming & Diving Championships, the Jamestown Community College men’s swimming & diving finished third with a point total of 338.

The Jayhawks got off to a good start as Cole Carlson (Boonsboro, MD/Southwestern High) placed second in the 100 yard freestyle, posting a new personal best with a time of 53.24. Joseph Keyser (Mayville, NY/Chautauqua Lake) placed fourth in the event with a new personal best of 56.44.

Colby Pantall (Jamestown, NY/Maple Grove HS) continued the momentum, placing second in the 1650 freestyle with a new best with a time of 20:19.01, shaving over a minute off his previous best. Jackson Vanstrom (Jamestown, NY/Southwestern High) placed fourth in the event with a time of 21:48.93.

Matthew Fennell (Fourways Garden, Johannesburg, South Africa/King Edwards VII School) placed first in the 50 yard butterfly with a new best of a time of 27.38. Fennell also found the podium in the 200 yard breaststroke with a new best of 2:47.82.

The relay team of Carlson, Vanstrom, Pantall, and Fennell placed third in the 400 yard freestyle with a time of 3:51.21.
