Finch sets school record at Region 3 meet
Ike grad finishes third in 1,000; Warren alum Hennessy places fifth in 50 breaststroke
ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Kaylee Constantino opened the NJCAA Region 3 Northeast District Swimming & Diving Championships in style on Friday at Monroe Community College.
Recording-setting style, in fact.
Lindsay Finch did, too.
Needless to say, Jamestown CC coach Todd Conklin was pleased after the first day of the three-day event.
“For the first day of the meet I’m proud of everyone,” he said. “Every single person that swam today all had personal-best swims. We’re off to the right start. (Today) is a big day with double sessions. We’re really looking to move forward with the swims we had.”
The headliners were Constantino, Finch and Tia Moppert, who helped the Jayhawk women accumulate 124 points, good for second place, 14 points back of Monroe CC.
Constantino, a freshman from Frewsburg, New York, set a Jamestown CC and Region 3 championship record in the 50 breast stroke with a time of 32.69 and also placed third in the 50 freestyle (26.65). Finch, who hails from Russell, established a school record in the 1,000 (12:55.25) in a third-place finish; and Moppert, a Gowanda, N.Y. native, claimed first in the 200 individual medley in 2:31.03.
Earning second-place finishes for the Jamestown CC women were the 800 freestyle relay team of Finch, Emily Lyon (Panama, N.Y./Panama), Jade Vidas (JohannesburgGauteng, South Africa/Parktown HS for Girls) and Jenna Fiebiger (Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa/Fourways HS) in 9:27.47; and Vidas in the 200 individual medley (2:38.59).
Lyon was third in the 50 breast stroke (39.10) and Kylee Hennessy (Warren/Warren) placed fifth in the 50 breaststroke (42.08) and seventh in the 50 freestyle (33.25).
The Jamestown CC men are in third place with 81 points, highlighted by a second-place finish in the 800 freestyle relay (8:38.03). Members of that relay were Colby Pantall (Jamestown, N.Y./Maple Grove), Jackson Vanstrom (Jamestown, N.Y./Southwestern), Joe Keyser (Mayville, N.Y./Chautauqua Lake) and Cole Carlson (Boonsboro, Maryland/Southwestern High).
Matt Fennell (Fourways Garden, Johannesburg, South Africa/KingEdwards VII School), 50 breast stroke (31.80); Pantall, 1,000 freestyle (12:10.89); and Carlson, 50 freestyle (24.06) all finished third in their respective events.
The team rankings for the women are Genesee CC, 138 points; Jamestown CC, 124; Monroe CC, 88; and Erie CC, 16. The team rankings for the men are Monroe CC, 113; Genesee CC, 101; Jamestown CC, 81, Erie CC, 24; and Herkimer County CC, 18.
