SHEFFIELD — The Sheffield Wolverines notched a victory at their first home wrestling match of the season, defeating Punxsutawney 45 -28 on Thursday.

The Wolverines scored crucial wins from some of their less-experienced wrestlers.

The match started with Gavin Fehlman (126 pounds) and 132 Collin Brown (132) receiving forfeits. At 138, freshman Alex Marfink posted a hard-fought 12-11 victory against David Kunselman

Punxsy came back with three consecutive victories at 138, 145 and 152. At 160, Sheffield’s Sawyer Andrews pulled off a dramatic win by pinning Joel Mehalic in the third period after a close back-and-forth battle. At 172, Joe Palmer of Sheffield lost to Punxsy’s Landon Marta by first-period pin. Punxsutawney’s Vincinzo Scott received a forfeit at 189.

First-year wrestler Matt Lobdell claimed the win at 215 by pinning Adin Shaffer in the first period for Lobdell’s first varsity win. At 285, Danah Campbell fought back from an early five-point deficit to take the lead and win the match with a third-period pin for the Wolverines. Sheffield closed out the match by receiving forfeits at 106 for Bryden Letendre and at 113 for Shelby Lobdell.

“It was great to see the kids step up to this challenge,” Wolverines coach Tom Holden said. “Our wins came from some of our younger, more inexperienced wrestlers tonight. They showed a lot of heart and wrestled tough. Each of their wins was key to us winning the match tonight. We are fortunate to have some depth to our lineup at the lower weight classes this year because we have a couple of key wrestlers out due to injury. I am really proud of this team and excited to see what the rest of the season holds for our Wolverines.”
