EDINBORO — It never gets easier when every team you face is ahead of you in the region standings. Yet, Warren wrestling continues to move “in the right direction,” said head coach Ted Carrington, even in a 57-15 loss on Wednesday at General McLane.

“I’m happy with how we performed,” said Carrington, whose Dragons are 0-3 in Region 5 dual matches. “Always things to brush up on, but we are moving in the right direction.”

The Lancers are coming off a close loss to unbeaten Cathedral Prep, so Wednesday’s matchup was definitely a tough one for Warren on paper. The Dragons won 3 of their first 8 weight classes, including “an exciting defensive pin” by freshman Jack Napolitan at 126 pounds, said Carrington.

Napolitan trailed GM junior Eric Conn 15-2 before a third-period pin cut the Lancers’ lead to 27-9.

Earlier in the evening, Warren’s Christian Papalia decisioned Ethan Snyder, 11-7, in “a good showing,” said Carrington.

Josh Letko had Warren’s only other win on the mat, a third-period pin of Ethan Brest at 132 pounds to pull the Dragons within 27-15.

“Josh Letko picked up an impressive pin against a quality opponent,” said Carrington. “Josh was taken down early in the first period, but answered back with a fast escape. Josh then got 3 near-fall points just before his opponent escaped. Letko answered back with a takedown. In the third period, Josh took down, then escaped. Josh then scored a takedown and the pin.

“Tristan Dolan had one of his best matches to date against Russell Wismer,” added Carrington. “Tristan was hit twice with locking hands as his opponent dropped to one knee, looking for the penalty point. Dolan was working his opponent to his back, but didn’t have enough time.”

McLane won the final four matches via pin and improves to 2-1 in the region.
