‘Eye opener’ for Dragons

Four Warren wrestlers place sixth at Tool City tourney

MEADVILLE — After several first varsity wins notched on the first night of the 42nd annual Tool City Wrestling Tournament on Friday, the young Dragons climbed a little higher on the learning curve Saturday.

While there were no more wins, Adika Fiscus (106 pounds), Christian Papalia (113 pounds), Cameron Williams (120 pounds) and Grant Heeter (145 pounds) each placed sixth in their respective weight brackets.

The good news: Heeter earned an award for “most pins in the shortest time,” said Warren coach Ted Carrington.

The bad news: “Adika Fiscus, wrestling in the semifinals, suffered a dislocated elbow,” said Carrington.

“Friday was an eye opener for sure,” he said. “The kids wrestled really tough. The kids really needed a few wins to boost morale. As always, the second day of a tournament is a dog fight. That was the real eye opener. Eating right, getting a good sleep, and getting a good warmup are keys to success for the second day. Our boys understand that now. For many of them, it was their very first tournament. As coach (Glenn) Baldensperger puts it, ‘They need to buy in to what we are selling.’ I think we made a few sales this weekend.

“Our biggest loss was the injury to Adika Fiscus,” added Carrington. “Adika suffered a severe dislocation and avulsion fracture to his elbow. Adika handled it like a champ; he was mentally tough even being in such physical pain. Our prayers are with him and his family for a speedy recovery. It’s always tough seeing an athlete that devotes his livelihood to a sport get injured. I know he will come back stronger than ever.”

YOUNGSVILLE 3-2 AT DUALS

COUDERSPORT — Youngsville went 3-2 at the Coudersport Duals on Saturday.

The Eagles beat Ridgway 42-6, Oswayo Valley 42-18 and Clarion 31-30 on criteria while losing to Lewisburg 60-15 and host Coudersport 36-21.

Logan McDonald (152 pounds) and Caden McCune (172 pounds) both went 3-2 for the Eagles.

“On the day Logan McDonald led the way on the mat wrestling up at 152 most of the time and picking up a couple quality wins,” Youngsville coach David Myers said, “while running into stiff competition in the Kaiden Wagner (Lewisburg) and Tyler Merritt (Ridgway) matches.”

Owen Auflick won his first varsity match, pinning Riley May of Oswayo Valley at 138 pounds.

“We’re really looking forward to the young wrestlers stepping up this week as the vets lead the way,” Myers added.

The Eagles travel to Seneca today and host Corry Wednesday.
