Dragons fall to second tough opponent in two days

DuBois shot 34 free throws to Warren’s 2 on Saturday in the Dragons’ 50-45 overtime loss at Warren Area High School.

It was the second straight day Warren lost to a quality opponent after Friday’s Region 5 loss to unbeaten Fairview.

DuBois is 8-3 overall and the Dragons fall to 6-5.

The loss puts a damper on Tommy Nyquist’s banked 3-pointer at the fourth quarter buzzer to tie the score at 39-39 and send the game to overtime.

A loose ball found DuBois’ Al Pasternak perfectly by accident on the wing for a 3-pointer and a late three-point lead. With 4.1 seconds left in regulation, Nyquist dribbled the length of the floor and banked a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Warren’s momentum didn’t carry over, however, as DuBois was 11-of-18 at the free throw line in overtime to build a lead.

The Dragons had considerably more field goals than DuBois, 19-12, but the Beavers finished 21-of-34 at the line for the game. Warren was 1-for-2.

“In a game where two teams are even, you can’t go through stretches where you make mental mistakes, and we did,” said Warren coach Jeff Berdine. “We made mental mistakes today. On defense, it cost us. We gave up some easy hoops. I thought that they did a good job of being more physical than us. The last couple years when we played DuBois, we’ve been the more physical team. This year, that was not the case.

“We’re learning,” said Berdine. “These are obviously ones you want to win, but, once again, this is why we play DuBois. It’s a good game… Today, I thought we made enough mistakes, offensively and defensively, to let them get out of here with a victory. When playing good teams, the goal is to get something out of these games.”

Nyquist scored 10 of his team-high 15 points in the fourth quarter and overtime.

Parks Ordiway finished with 13 points and JT Blum 11 in the loss.

Chooch Husted led DuBois with 22 points and was 7-of-10 at the free throw line.
