Erie pulls away from Dragons in second half
Erie went on a 10-0 run to end the third quarter and pulled away for a 65-46 non-region win over Warren’s boys basketball team on Wednesday at Warren Area High School.
Warren’s starting point guard, sophomore Tommy Nyquist, returned from injury for his first game of the season, but the Dragons had trouble finishing offensively, and on the boards.
“My biggest concern, once again, was underneath, athletically,” said Warren coach Jeff Berdine. “They were more athletic than us and I don’t think we did a good job rebounding… That’s where they beat us.
“In that 10-0 run, we took a couple bad shots, we had people with the ball that shouldn’t have it in certain situations, and instead of giving it up they took the extra two dribbles, and we’re done,” added Berdine.
Warren and Erie shot well in an 18-18 first quarter. Nyquist’s first shot of the season was a 3-pointer to give the Dragons an 8-5 lead. Parks Ordiway scored 8 of his team-high 15 points in the first quarter, including two 3-pointers.
Ordiway had 5 more points in the second quarter and Warren led 27-25 before a short run gave Erie a 30-28 halftime lead.
The Royals (4-3) scored the first four points of the second half. Pretty quickly, a Blum 3-pointer, a Nyquist driving layup and a Bryce Blair bucket off an assist from Nyquist gave Warren a 37-36 lead with 2:30 left in the third.
That’s when Erie scored 10 straight.
Layveon Gore and Jayvion Smith combined for 10 of Erie’s 16 (16-9) third-quarter points, and 11 of the Royals’ 19 (19-9) in the fourth. Gore led Erie with 19 points, Smith added 17, and Kre Thompson finished with 14.
Blum finished with 12 points for Warren (3-3).
“That’s a good team,” said Berdine. “They’re not that much better than us, but once again, it was an opportunity to get some of our older kids some work in a non-region game before we get into some region games because we will be switching up our rotations.”
Owen Becker scored 21 points and Brady Berdine 14 in Warren’s 64-56 junior varsity loss, earlier Wednesday.
