Earlier this season, Warren’s Madalynn Perry pitched an idea to tennis coach Tom Pellegrino and her teammates.
The Dragons should have a night in support of breast cancer awareness.
That idea came to fruition Tuesday evening against Villa Maria at Betts Park.
Although Warren lost 5-0 to the five-time defending District 10 champion Victors, the night was deemed a success by Pellegrino.
“Regardless of the outcome of this match, I am very proud of my girls,” he said. “Madalynn brought up this idea a couple weeks back and the team jumped all over it. Everyone participated.”
A pair of matches went three sets.
At third singles, Iris Kiehl lost a two-and-a-half-hour match to Basil Bannister 1-6, 6-2, 6-4.
At second doubles, Izzy Heacox and Sophie Olson lost to Lilli Beuchert and Sofia Falvo 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.
“The girls left it all on the court and I thought played a very competitive match all around,” Pellegrino said. “I was very impressed with how we held up against this District 10 powerhouse. They are very well-coached and have an extremely deep lineup. I’m very proud of how all the girls played today.”
At first singles, Villa Maria’s Anne Poranski beat Sydney Govoni 6-1, 6-1. At second singles, Sophia Glance beat Mackenzie Lester 6-3, 6-1. At first doubles, Margaret Prichard and Annie Prichard beat Perry and Sydnie Cochran 6-1, 6-3.
Villa Maria’s large roster enabled all 20 Warren players to play matches.
All money made from the T-shirts will be donated to breast cancer education and awareness.
“This was a great idea and will be something we continue to do every season,” Pellegrino said. “The most important thing is that today we ‘served for a cure.’ The girls came out and supported a great cause, and got to enjoy themselves and have a fun night of tennis.”
