Sheffield falls to Ridgway
RIDGWAY — Sheffield let a 2-1 lead slip away and fell to Ridgway, 21-25, 25-22, 25-23, 18-25, 12-15 in a girls volleyball match Monday night.
“We served well the entire night, but had some unfortunate serving errors in the fifth set,” said Sheffield head coach Melissa Lemay. “We struggled at times with our passing, which caused us to have to run an out-of-system offense or free-ball the ball over the net.”
Sheffield dropped set one, but quickly won back-to-back close sets before running out of gas on the final two. Lemay attributed some of the Wolverines’ struggles to lack of communication, which she hopes after today’s match they can resolve in their first practice in a week on Wednesday.
“Communication was an issue tonight, and that is definitely something that we can control on our side of the net,” said Lemay of her young team, which faced an Elkers squad that started five seniors and a junior. “It can be so detrimental to the match when the communication isn’t there.”
Kassidy Orinko had 10 kills, 17 digs and six blocks. Lynzie Grubbs added another six kills and five blocks, and Kadence Steffan recorded 13 digs and 17 assists.
Sheffield junior varsity, led by Emily Foster’s seven digs and three kills along with Syrena Antonuccio’s four service aces, won both sets, 25-23.
