Nice showing

Warren girls tennis team performs well at districts

The Warren Dragons girls tennis team ended its season with good showings at the District 10 Tournament.

Last Saturday, Sydney Govoni, Mackenzie Lester, and Iris Kiehl all competed in the singles tournament.

Lester won her first-round match, 8-0, against Franklin’s No. 2 singles player. In the second round, she was squared up against the 8 seed from Mercyhurst, losing 8-1.

Kiehl won her first-round match, 8-1, against Wilmington’s No. 2 singles player. In her second round, Kiehl played the 5 seed from Hickory, Isabelle Frangakis, losing, 8-2.

Govoni won her first-round match, 8-2, against Oil City’s No. 2 singles player. In the second round, Govoni lost a very close match to the 7 seed, Mercyhurst’s Angela Chardeen, 8-5.

“Saturday was a great showing for our program,” Warren coach Tom Pellegrino said. “The girls all came to play and competed at a high level. This is the first time in years that all three players sent to districts were able to win their first-round matches.

On Thursday, three warren teams competed in the District 10 doubles tournament and we had another “great showing” for the program, according to Pellegrino.

After falling down, 4-7, in the eight-game pro set, Sydnie Cochran and Sophie Olson made an amazing comeback and won their first-round match, 9-7, over Hickory’s third doubles team. In the second round, they got paired up against the No. 3 seed from Mercyhurst, losing 8-0.

Izzy Heacox and Madalynn Perry got paired against the No. 5 seed from Hickory in the first round and played a very high-quality match. They lost to Isabelle Frangakis and Nicolette Leonard, 8-5.

“Izzy and Perry played a level up today and I was very impressed with the fight they gave a very good Hickory team,” Pellegrino said.

Govoni and Lester made it all the way to the quarterfinals. In the first round, they defeated Oil City’s second doubles team, 8-0. In the second round, they defeated Grove City’s third doubles, 8-3. In the quarterfinals, Govoni and Lester got a tough draw, going up against the No. 1 seed from Villa, Annie Prichard and Abbie Consiglio, falling 8-1.

“Abbie and Annie won the D10 title last year and were fourth in the state overall,” Pellegrino said. “They managed to repeat and win the title again over Mercyhurst in the final later in the day. Watching the quarterfinals, we felt that there were many teams we would have faired well against, but it was just luck of the draw.

“Overall, I was very impressed with our outcome. This is the second year in a row that we have had a Warren team into the quarterfinals of districts. This year we got some very tough draws, but we made the best of it. This was a great experience for our younger players and we are already looking forward to next season. As for the two seniors, they both ended the season on a high note with some great wins.”

Continued Pellegrino: “I’m beyond proud of not only our results at districts, but our whole season overall. This is year two for our new program and we accomplished things that haven’t been done in years. We had all three girls move into the second round of district singles, a D10 doubles quarterfinalist, a win over Fairview for the first time in 20 years, and a win over Grove City, who was the Region 1 champion this year. The improvement I’ve seen over the course of these 10 weeks has been truly outstanding. Our team is very young and hungry, and I’m already excited for next season. Our girls got a taste of success this season and are going to be a team to watch out for next year.”
