State-ranked Cathedral Prep routs Warren

ERIE — The goal in Warren’s high school football game at Cathedral Prep on Friday was to simply get through it “in one piece,” according to head coach Mark Morelli.

Prep is ranked in the top five in the state in Class 5A and has outscored opponents 153-12 after a 55-6 win over the Dragons on Friday at Dollinger Field.

Next, Warren can get back to an even playing field with a Region 5 road game at Franklin at 7 p.m. a week from today.

Senior first-year starting quarterback Carter Barnes had thrown three touchdown passes through a 2-0 start and added another on Prep’s first offensive play of the game on Friday — a 45-yard TD to Wakeem Page.

Barnes threw two more before the end of the first quarter and Prep led 28-0. He threw his fourth touchdown pass early in the second quarter and Prep led 35-0 at the half.

The second half started with a running clock and 10-minute quarters (instead of 12). It also started with a Demario Crawford kickoff return for a touchdown and a 41-0 Prep lead.

Warren would get on the scoreboard once. After a fumble recovery, sophomore quarterback Eric Dippold completed a long pass inside the Prep 10 to senior Ben White. He finished the opportunity by putting the ball right on Justice Greene’s hands for a score.

Prep can deliver a punch and answer one — taking the ensuing kickoff for a score and 47-6 lead.

Franklin — Warren’s opponent Sept. 18 — is 0-3 after a blowout loss to Eisenhower on Friday.

“Erie Cathedral Prep is not state ranked year in and year out for nothing,” said Warren coach Mark Morelli. “They have the size, speed, and talent that is unmatched. It was a real eye-opener for our kids. With all that being said, our kids gave us an effort and they played to the best of their ability. We did have some positives — we recovered three fumbles and were able to get through the contest in one piece with no injuries. Now, we can turn our attention back to Region 5 and a game next Saturday at Franklin.”
