JAMESTOWN, N.Y. — The last two sets were a grind, but Jamestown Community College volleyball coach Ashley Lund gave her team high marks for its season-opening match Tuesday evening at the Physical Education Complex.

Sparked by freshman Emma McCarthy (Olean, Allegany-Limestone) with 10 kills, freshman Maggie McClellian (Olean/Olean) with nine kills and freshman Claire Pumford (Jamestown/Jamestown) with seven kills, the Jayhawks upended Lakeland CC, 25-15, 25-18, 19-25, 26-24, before an estimated crowd of 200.

“It was great to be back home, and what better way to open the season than with a gym full of fans and a win,” Lund said. “I’ve always thought that we have the best fans, but being away for a year makes you appreciate them that much more. It was great to see the stands full of life and excitement. And to top it off with a win only makes it that much sweeter.”
