Tarp Skunks pull away late

JAMESTOWN, N.Y. — Justin Bailey’s two-run single broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning and the Jamestown Tarp Skunks beat the Elmira Power 5-2 in Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League action Sunday evening at Diethrick Park.
With two outs in the sixth, Jamestown’s Johnny Kampes singled and stole second before Padraig O’Shaughnessy walked. The inning was prolonged when DiMaggio Cazares reached on a dropped third strike before Bailey gave the Tarp Skunks a 4-2 lead with his single.
Jamestown added an insurance run in the seventh. Haiden Hunt singled with one out, went to second on Luke Turner’s two-out single and scored on a Danny Hosley RBI single.
Jack Laird allowed four hits and a pair of unearned runs in 6 2/3 innings while striking out six to pick up the win for the first-place Tarp Skunks, who improved to 23-11.
Brandon Demma induced a flyout to get out of the seventh inning, then allowed a walk and a double in the eighth before Charlie Nichols got out of an eighth-inning jam with a double play.
Matt Henson pitched a scoreless ninth for his 11th save.
Niagara took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning when Laird allowed both runs to score on two-out wild pitches.
Jamestown answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth. Kampes led off with a single and scored on O’Shaughnessy’s RBI double to the left-center field fence. O’Shaughnessy then advanced to third on a wild pitch before scoring on Chase Carlson’s two-out single off the Power third baseman’s glove.
The Tarp Skunks are off today before returning to action at 7 p.m. Tuesday against the Elmira Pioneers at Diethrick Park.
