Board to have reading on internet, media policies
The Warren County School District will address several items with second readings of policies regarding technology, social media and internet safety.
The meeting will be on Monday beginning at 6 p.m.at the District’s Central Office Building in Russell. It will be followed by a Special Board Meeting to which the policies will be addressed.
A second reading for revision on the policy with regard to district telephones will be presented. It addresses classroom telephones and offices throughout all district buildings to support instructional, operational, and safety needs.Their use is strictly for official district communication, and personal calls are discouraged. Students may only use these phones with direct approval from authorized school officials.
Additionally, the policy on Security of Computerized Personal Information and Breach Notification, will also be presented for its second reading. The board remains committed to the security of the district’s computerized data and to addressing the risk of a breach of those systems involving the possible disclosure of personal information. This policy addresses the manner in which the District will respond to unauthorized access and acquisition of computerized data that compromises the security and confidentiality of personal information.
The Technology and Internet Safety policy will be presented with its second reading and has been revised every two years since 2022.
An adoption of the policy on Social Media, on second reading, will be presented. It states that all school district social media accounts shall operate as either a non-public forum (where the public may not comment on the District’s posts), or as a limited public forum, where the public may comment publicly on the District’s posts – subject to certain guidelines. Whether a social media account is operated as a non-public forum or limited public forum shall be determined by the account operator. The use of personal social media accounts is to be restricted from communications made privately with students including any school district business. One-to-one communication with a student concerning any school district business shall be limited to the electronic resources provided by the District such as e-mail or classroom management applications. School district employees are strongly encouraged to utilize privacy settings on personal social media accounts to ensure that a professional boundary is maintained between the employee and students and parents.
Finally, a policy on Employee Use of Electronic Devices, on second reading, will be presented for adoption.The Board recognizes that electronic devices are useful to many employees and may assist in executing their job duties, however the policy will enforce and establish safe and reasonable guidelines for mobile device use, ensuring the safety and security of employees and students. This policy is written to also include the prohibition of employees from the use of electronic devices to take photographs, or to record audio or video at any time during the school day or at any school sponsored event that is not open to the general public, unless the building administrator has authorized the photograph or recording for educational or instructional purposes by giving written consent.
