Dragons ‘will see success because of her’

Warren Area High School’s head track and field coach Kevin Dustin knows the old adage “big things come in small packages.”

That’s not an indictment on Kyleigh Wilson’s physical stature, but more on what she accomplished in such a short time on the Dragons’ track team.

“Kyleigh was a huge part of our success this past year,” said Dustin. “There is a good reason she was our team’s MVP. She scored the most points throughout the season, she came home with the most individual medals from districts, and she was a great leader for the team.”

But that success will carry forward, which is most impressive being she only competed two high school seasons — as a sophomore and a senior.

“Younger athletes learned from her and that is something I always think is in a way more important than what you achieve as an individual,” he said. “Now, don’t get me wrong, what she did in a short time was amazing, but she leaves behind a winning attitude and a hard work ethic. For years to come, the kids who trained with her and learned from her will see success because of her. Then, what they do will get passed along as well.

“The legacy we leave as athletes and students is very important,” said Dustin. “I’ve told teams, what you achieve now and how you achieve it leads to the success of not only you and your team, but for those to come after you. If you leave behind a good legacy, you are immediately a part of all success that comes long after you graduate. We have a handful of these types of kids on the team and this year we lose one of them by Kyleigh graduating. She is a great athlete, but, more importantly, she is a great person. I have no doubt she will see a ton of success continuing her track and field career at Slippery Rock University.

“Good luck, Kyleigh, and thank you for all you have done.”
