Kelsey Stuart struck out 19 batters and only allowed one run over 14 innings on Saturday in Warren’s doubleheader sweep of Fort LeBoeuf.

“Kelsey continues to improve every game,” Warren coach Carissa Stuart said of her senior pitcher after the Dragons’ 2-0 and 2-1 wins over the Bison at Lady Dragons Field. “She dug deep and battled through two games for us.”

Stuart threw a two-hitter in Game 1, allowing a single in the fourth and double in the fifth. She only pitched to two batters over the minimum.

Fort LeBoeuf’s Kendal Stull was matching Stuart until the third. Halle Kuzminski walked, Katie Madigan moved her to third on a single and Rylie Yeager scored her on a one-out sacrifice fly.

In the fourth, Alex Neureiter reached on an error and advanced on Carly Beers’ base hit. Neureiter scored an insurance run when Ellee Irwin reached on LeBoeuf’s second error of the inning.

That was all Stuart would need.

In Game 2, Warren trailed 1-0 when Jordan Popowski’s triple down the right-field line scored Megan Richardson, who had walked.

Popowski started Game 2 and held Warren hitless and scoreless until the sixth. Kuzminski reached on a hard shot to shortstop for an error before Mineweaser sacrificed her to second. Madigan tied the game with a one-out single up the middle — Warren’s first hit, and Stuart’s two-out double scored Madigan to take the 2-1 lead. Stuart got out of a two-on, one-out jam in the sixth and shut the door in the seventh.

“Once again, we did just enough to get us two big region wins,” said Coach Stuart, whose Dragons are 11-2 overall and 8-2 in Region 5. “Their outfield made some nice catches to keep us off the bases numerous times. I have to give credit to Ellee Irwin in center as well; she was all over the outfield and made some big outs. Halee Mineweaser was clutch getting a sacrifice bunt down in the second game to move Kuzminski over for us.”

With the playoffs approaching, Villa leads the region at 11-1 and Fort LeBoeuf is third at 6-3 in the eight-team region, behind Warren.

The Dragons host General McLane on Monday in the first of four remaining region games.
