Berdine’s HR jump-starts Dragons past Kane

Warren baseball coach Rick Eaton is happy the Dragons were able to play Kane in a nonregion game Friday. It was nice to get some swings and make some plays a day before they host Cathedral Prep in a Region 5 game at 11 a.m. today.

Ben Berdine is happy the Dragons were able to play Kane because his first-inning two-run bomb to left field and into the creek gave Warren a 2-0 lead. The Dragons eventually held off Kane for an 8-5 win.

“Ben got the momentum going right off the bat hitting the home run,” said Eaton, “and we got some other clutch hits and got the eight runs, and we got through it in the end when they started squaring the ball up. We didn’t walk people before they squared it up and that’s the key right there. Dylan (Maeder) did a great job throwing strikes and the defense made some nice plays behind him.”

Maeder started for Warren (6-1) and threw 5-2/3 innings, allowing two earned runs, striking out four.

Warren led 6-0 before Kane put up two in the top of the fifth.

After Berdine’s homer, Micah Passmore’s RBI double in the second made it 3-0, and Berdine’s two-run double keyed a three-run fourth inning.

When Maeder got into trouble in the sixth, Archie Teconchuk finished the inning and threw a scoreless seventh.

Ben Sowa and Passmore added RBI singles for insurance.

Passmore was 2 for 2 with two runs scored, two RBIs and a walk. Berdine was 2 for 4 with four RBIs, and Maeder was 2 for 2.

The Dragons had nine hits and six walks.

Kane (7-3) had 10 hits, but Warren only walked one batter. Harley Morris, Carson Whiteman and Justin Peterson had two hits each. Whiteman and Jacob Constanzo had two RBIs apiece in the loss.

YOUNGSVILLE RALLIES

ERIE — Youngsville scored five runs in the top of the sixth inning to rally past Iroquois for an 8-7 victory — its first of the season.

The Eagles pounded out 12 hits with four players have two hits apiece.

Matt DeSimone had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs while Jason Beers, Josh Walsh and Aiden Mancuso each chipped in a pair of singles apiece.

Derek Lucks earned the win on the mound, coming within an out of a complete game. He struck out 10 and just two of his seven runs allowed were earned.

Iroquois put the potential tying run on third with one out in the seventh before Lucks struck out the next batter on his 103rd pitch of the afternoon. Lucks then had to be lifted due to pitch-count restrictions and Walsh got the final out on a comebacker to the mound to end the game.

Iroquois led 2-0 early before Youngsville took a 3-2 lead in the top of the third inning. The Braves answered right back with a three-run bottom of the third inning and eventually took a 7-3 lead.

Starting at $3.50/week.
