Wolverines seek second consecutive victory

Now that the monkey is off their backs, the Sheffield Wolverines are in attack mode.

Last week’s 31-20 win over Cameron County snapped a 23-game losing streak, and now the Wolverines look to make it two in a row when they travel to Knox to take on the Keystone Panthers.

It won’t be an easy task, however, as the Panthers are off to a 4-1 start, their best since they began the 1989 season 5-0.

The Panthers are coming off a come-from-behind 14-7 win over Curwensville last week, and feature a balanced offensive attack. Juniors Noah Weaver (357 yards, 7.3 yards per carry) and Taylar Altman (42-288-6.9) lead the rushing attack.

Quarterback Issak Jones is completing 60 percent of his passes (43-of-72) for 895 yards, nine touchdowns and six interceptions. His top targets are Jayden Blazosky (15 receptions, 265 yards, 4 touchdowns) and Alex Rapp (9-270-3 and 30 yards per catch).

They will be tasked with slowing down a potent Sheffield passing attack, led by quarterback Aujamier Slappy-Washington and wide receivers Caden Smead and Mirhan Price. Slappy-Washington had 348 yards passing and three touchdowns in the win over Cameron County, two of which went to Smead, who racked up 200 yards receiving in the victory. Price caught the other, a 51-yarder. In fact, all three of Slappy-Washington’s touchdown tosses were over 50 yards, he also added a rushing touchdown.

Smead capped the victory with a 70-yard interception return. Outside of a pair of garbage time touchdowns by the Red Raiders, the Sheffield defense held them in check. They will need to be on their ‘A’ game against the Panthers, who have already put 56 and 49 points on the board in separate games this season.

“It’s the start of something as far as I’m concerned,” said Sheffield coach Chris Korbar following the win over Cameron County. “This is something that needed to happen. No more of that 23 junk anymore. We’re win No. 1 going forward.”
