ERIE, Pa. – Make it 2-0 for both the Warren Area High School boys and girls swim teams after a sweep of Mercyhurst Prep on Thursday.

The girls won by the slimmest of margins, 85-84, while the boys earned a 104-60 victory.

Both teams had a number of strong efforts in the victory

“It was a total team effort, both boys and girls,” said Warren coach Russ Beyer. “A lot of our younger and first year swimmers stepped up and contributed. It helped our girls win a close meet and helped the boys team keep the lead. I told them before the meet that we started on a high note and want to keep plugging away. They answered the call.”

Sophie Olsen was a multiple individual event winner for the girls, taking first in the 200 freestyle and the 500 free.

Andrew Beyer (200 IM, 100 backstroke), Stephen Ashbaugh (100 breaststroke, 50 freestyle) and Max Harrison (100 freestyle, 200 freestyle) were multiple event winners for the boys.

Olsen and Cara Anderson qualified for district in the 200 free, as did Katie Beyer in the 200 IM, Harrison in the 200 free and Hunter Smith in the 200 IM.

“Excellent races in the 500 free by Cade Johnson and Sophie Olsen,” Beyer said. “Big improvements by Elizabeth Smith, Marcus Bonavita and Naomi Hahn. Kayla Knupp and Graham Carr, Sidney Gavone, Grace Panucci. They’ve been swimming 50s and this meet they swam 100s. They’re taking it to the next level and doing great. Cade Johnson had some good time drops and Ava Turner had some PRs.”
