Our opinion: Taking wireless to the roads
The idea of WiFi on school buses isn’t new for many cities across the country, but it could be a real benefit for areas like Warren County that are struggling to build out high-speed internet access.
Warren County is the second-largest school district in Pennsylvania when measured in square miles, with buses logging some 1.8 million miles each year taking children to and from schools.
We hope some of the students on the bus use the WiFi to get a jump on homework while they’re on the bus. That will come in handy for some students who spend the most time on the bus or for athletes who spend more time on the bus going to and from games.
Warren County School District officials hope WiFi on school buses will make long bus rides better for children and decrease disciplinary incidents on the bus. That outcome may come true. An April 2017 case study of the Raytown School District in Missouri showed a 45% decrease in disciplinary referrals when WiFi was installed on its school buses.
There are probably going to be issues that need to be ironed out as Warren County moves ahead with WiFi-enabled buses. But this a good investment that is worth any short-term headaches.
