No option in hike

Dear Editor, This is in regard to the article noting that a Lancaster County Democrat Mike Sturla wants to give counties and municipalities the option to enact a 1% sales tax to help raise additional revenue. In my opinion, a tax is never optional for the people who live in a community. This is ridiculous. Mr. Sturla apparently wants to raise our sales tax so that the tax-exempt entities don’t have to feel the burn. Let’s put it into perspective. Most of us are making anywhere between $8,000 and $50,000.00 a year — give or take — and he wants to increase the tax so that ...

Going in circles

Dear Editor, I read the story this week about the council discussion regarding the roundabout. It is apparent to me and hopefully many others that former Mayor Maurice Cashman and Councilman Phil Gilbert either have a stake in the construction of said roundabout or are trying to save face by sticking to the previous council votes they took that put us in this position in the first place. Also, that is why the public at large voted for the current members of council, who are attempting to address the problems created by the poor decision of voting “yes” in the first place. We ...

No help for health care

Dear Editor, It has been brought to my attention that Rep. Kathy Rapp is personally opposed to allowing the patient-staff ratio bill out of the Health Committee to be discussed on the floor of the General Assembly because she have stated you haven’t heard from enough nurses. Have you heard from or listened to the seniors of this state regarding their inability to get sufficient nursing care in the hospital? I further understand that this bill has bipartisan support, something not seen very often in our state. If you haven’t heard, then let me tell you about my mother who at 92 ...

Urgency with patient safety

Dear Editor, This is an open letter to Rep. Kathy Rapp. I am a Critical Care Registered Nurse from Bucks County. I have been fighting on the front lines of various diseases/illnesses for the past 10 years. As a previous hospital administrator, I know you are keen to the challenges hospitals face from a business perspective. However, judging by your recent comments regarding the “lack of valid grievances” from nurses about unsafe staffing it is clear that you’re are sinfully unaware of the dire challenges of patient safety. Safe staffing is a daily problem. These difficulties ...

A trouble with Theory?

Dear Editor, He ran in the Virginia governor’s race on banning Critical Race Theory in public schools — and Glenn Youngkin won. He said he would ban it, and as one of his first acts he did. Even though Critical Race Theory isn’t even taught there. What was the big deal in Virginia? Sure a slave state, but there were plenty of those. What went on in Virginia? Maybe this is it. In 1808 the young United States of America banned International Slave Trade via Congress. Thomas Jefferson was president at the time. Turns out this wasn’t an act to ban or limit slavery at all. ...
