Matthew Beyeler

Matthew David Beyeler, 90, of Russell, Pa., passed away surrounded by his family following a brief illness on Monday, August 14, 2017. Matthew was born March 13, 1927, in Bradford, Pa., to Karl A Beyeler and Thelma N. Beyeler.

Matthew enlisted in the US Navy at age 16 in his senior year at Bradford Senior High School, graduating in 1944. He served in WWII and the Korean Conflict, he was a Quartermaster Signalman, serving in submarine service as well as spending a tour of duty aboard the USS Williamsburg, the Presidential Yacht of Harry S. Truman. He also served briefly in the US Army and the National Guard. After his military service, Matthew lived in Cyclone, PA, and Russell, PA, working for Verizon, formerly Bell Telephone Company of PA in the Bradford and Warren offices for 35 years, retiring April 1, 1985.

While residing in Cyclone, Matthew served as a member of the Smethport School Board and the Hilltop Volunteer Fire Department. Living in the Russell area for the last 49 years Matthew enjoyed following the Eisenhower High School athletic teams and marching band. He was widely recognized for taking his motor home to band competitions and football games and served as ‘tailgate central’ for many years.

He was a Life Member of the American Legion Post 108, Bradford, PA. He was a 32nddegree Mason and member of The Union Blue Lodge 334, Bradford PA, a member of the Coudersport Consistory, Coudersport, PA and Zem-Zem Shriners International, Erie PA.

He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Twila Littlefield Beyeler; sister-in-law, Mary A Burton of Cyclone, PA; sister, Betsy Maitland of Cape Canaveral, FL; son, Dana A. and his wife Virginia (Ginnie) of Harrisonburg, VA, daughters, Dr. Natalie Beyeler and husband Dr. Mark London of Russell and Palmer AK, Sara Yackey and husband Merritt of Sewanee, TN and Cara Waito and husband KP of Marshall, MI; grandchildren–Nathan Beyeler and wife Karen of Harrisonburg, VA, and their children, Luke, Timothy, Jonathan and Isabell; Dr. Dana August Manelick and wife Sarah of Palmer, AK, and their children, Taylor, Paxson and Harper; Elizabeth Autumn Manelick Siebel and husband Major Daniel Siebel, of Washington, DC, and their children, Elleny and Everyly; David Austin Manelick and wife Jordan of Palmer, AK; Millicent Anderson and husband Sgt John Anderson of Fort Hood, TX and their children, Merritt and Aubrey; Morgan Yackey, LSW of Scranton, PA; and Lt Brock Yackey, USMC, Snead Ferry, NC; and Brooke, Addison and Matthew Waito, all of Marshall, MI; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Matthew was preceded in death by a sister, Margery Lehman; brother, Wade Beyeler; and grandsons Matthew A. Beyeler and Aaron D. Waito.

Friends will be received at the Peterson-Blick Funeral Home, Inc. 1003 Penn. Ave. E., Warren, on Thursday, August 17, from 3 to 4 p.m., at which time a memorial service will be held there with her grandson, Nathan Beyeler, officiating, and son, Dana Beyeler, assisting. Military honors will be presented by members of the Youngsville American Legion Honor Guard.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Matthew’s name may be made to a charity of choice.
