City and County seek residents to fill commission vacancies

Local officials are encouraging residents to step into government roles as both city and county boards work to fill vacancies on key commissions.

At the city level, openings are currently available on the Planning Commission and the Parks, Recreation and Landscaping Commission. These boards play an important role in shaping local policy and community development.

According to Codes and Planning Director Randall Rossey, the Planning Commission conducts research for City Council and provides recommendations to guide decision-making. The commission also reviews rezoning requests, subdivision proposals and development plans.

Meanwhile, the Parks, Recreation and Landscaping Commission focuses on developing recreational programs and advising City Council on park-related matters.

Residents interested in serving on either city commission can submit an application through the city’s website. Applications are reviewed by Rossey before being forwarded to City Council for final approval.

At the county level, officials are also seeking to fill a vacancy on the Planning Commission, a nine-member board that works with the county’s Planning and Zoning Department on land use issues.

The commission represents all 27 municipalities in the county and welcomes applicants from a wide range of backgrounds and interests. Residents interested in serving are encouraged to contact county Planning and Zoning Director Michael Lyon.

The push to fill these positions comes at a time of declining civic participation. According to surveys conducted by the University of Michigan’s Center for Local, State, and Urban Policy, overall resident engagement with local government has dropped from 58% in 2012 to 38% in 2025.

Local leaders hope increased participation in boards and commissions will help strengthen community involvement and ensure perspectives are represented in decision-making.

Starting at $3.50/week.
