Alleghany Thunder Chicken mascot Layla Mueller attends every game.
The Alleghany Thunder Chickens, an 8 and under travel baseball team, was born out of the love of America’s pastime.
Founders Joe Bailey and Ricky Ristau knew their children wanted to play more baseball than the Little League season offered, so they created a new team in 2023 that would do just that.
The travel team offered the team a more extended season, more exposure to the game, and the opportunity to play at a more competitive level.
More than that, the team has created friendships and bonds that will stay with these kids forever.
Theo Andersen said, “I love baseball and the friendships I have made. We work together to win games.”

Andersen’s mother, Tina Andersen, said, “The bonds they have created are awesome. Most of these kids would never be on the same Little League team due to their locations around the county. It has been enjoyable to watch.”
Layla Mueller, a team member’s sister, even purchased a mascot outfit on her own and wears it to the games to offer support and delight to the players and crowd alike.
The team also aims to give back. One way they have done that is by donating to the Warren Little League as a thank-you for being allowed to use the Betts Jackson field. The team invited the organization’s president, Joe Papalia, to a game to present him with a check.
The team had the opportunity to play on the Pitt Bradford campus this year and had a successful season, finishing strong by winning the championship at Franklin’s Beat the Heat tournament.
The Thunder Chickens’ success has led organizers and coaches to consider expanding to include 9u and 10u teams if there is enough interest.
Tryouts for the 2025 season will be at Betts Jackson on Saturday from 1 to 2:30 p.m. for 8u and 2:30 to 4 p.m. for 9u and 10u and again on Sept. 14 with the same times. For more information, contact the Alleghany Thunder Chickens at (814) 706-6210.
