State prison ordered in gaming center break-in case

One of two Clarendon men charged with breaking into the Sheffield Gaming center will be headed to state prison.

Dustin L. Nelson, 44, was sentenced Friday in county court multiple years in the state system on a total of three dockets, one of which was the break-in in Sheffield while another centered around an incident at the Restore in Youngsville.res

The incident at the gaming center occurred on Jan. 4 shortly after 4 a.m.

A white male was observed entering the gaming facility and picking the lock of one of the machines, allegedly taking the bill acceptor and cash box before leaving on foot, according to the affidavit of probable cause.

Police allege he came back about 90 minutes later and managed to steal cash from two additional machines.

A report from a citizen identified that individual as Dustin Nelson. That individual allegedly observed Nelson

and another man “in her backyard around her shed trespassing.”

Gaming Center staff told police that Nelson stole approximately $3,395 and that the damage to the three machines totaled about $15,000.

Nelson was sentenced Friday on a count of burglary to seven to 14 months incarceration in connection with this incident. The sentence also included $3,000 in restitution, a no contact/no trespass order and $550 in fines and fees.

He was sentenced to an additional six to 12 months incarceration on a count of conspiracy (criminal trespass) for the incident at the Restore. He was ordered to pay $50 in restitution and $525 in fines and fees.

The most severe penalty came at a third docket where Nelson was sentenced on charges of criminal trespass and theft.

The criminal trespass charge brought a sentence of 16 to 32 months incarceration with credit for 150 days time served, $1,050 in fines and fees, submission of a DNA sample and $13,869.33 in restitution. He was given priority for drug and alcohol treatment in the state system.

The theft charge included an additional six months to a year of incarceration.
