Silver Winds Flute Choir to perform Sunday at First Lutheran Church

The Silver Winds Flute Choir will perform Sunday at 4 p.m. at First Lutheran Church. Members include, front, from left, Deena Winters, Emily Frederick Rose, Ellen Scalise and, standing, Jessalyn Peterson-Palmer, Pat Murphy, Laura Whitten, Nancy Scott, Becky Darbee and Judi Danielson.

The Silver Winds Flute Choir will present “April Enchantment” on Sunday.

The concert is free and will be held at First Lutheran Church beginning at 4 p.m. on April 14.

Becky Darbee said the program will include “selections that are from many familiar magical stories created for both animated and traditional movies.”

That includes pieces from Beauty and the Beast, Titanic, Jurassic Park, Wizard of Oz and Little Mermaid.

Darbee said that the group will also perform “Memories of East Tennessee” by Austin Alan Scott which is a “a three movement piece that takes the listener back to the isolated communities and lifestyle of a bygone age in the Great Smoky Mountains.”

Two pieces will have transportation themes.

“Traffic Jam by Ricky Lombardo and Railroaded by Nicole Chamberlain – recently performed at the Warren Philharmonic Orchestra March concert – are pieces designed to elicit the feeling of immersion in traffic and on a train,” Darbee explained. ”

Two classical pieces are included – Festival by W. Brandt and Petite Suite-En Bateau by Claude Debussy/G. Hinze.

“The first selection is celebratory and the second selection creates a sense of riding on the sea in a gently rocking boat,” she added.

The Silver Winds Flute Choir is made up of nine flutists from the area.

“This group grew from a core group of five musicians that began playing together in 2007,” Darbee said. “The group size has fluctuated over time with up to ten flutists in the Choir. The full complement of flutists allows the choir to perform a wide range of styles represented in the flute choir repertoire.”
