‘Very challenging’

Warren Philharmonic takes audience on train-inspired journey

You probably wouldn’t often expect to find “trains” and “classical music” in the same concert.

But that’s exactly the journey the Warren Philharmonic took its concertgoers on Sunday afternoon at Holy Redeemer Church in Warren with the program “All Aboard.”

“This program is a very neat program,” Music Director Bryan Eckenrode said at the outset of the performance. “You probably don’t hear a lot of classical music about trains.”

He said that he was raised in Cresson and that his father was a railroader.

“One day I was going through the music library… and found some of these train pieces,” he said. “What an interesting program to put together. (There is a) lot of variety of what people think of trains.”

Selections on the program included “Pacific 231” as well as “Model Railway” by Charles Williams, “John Henry” by Aaron Copland, “Duke Ellington Fantasy,” “Orange Blossom Special” arranged by Robert Wendel and “Copenhagener Eisenbahn Dampf Galopp” by H. C. Lumbye.

It’s a program that Eckenrode said would include a “lot of percussion.”

That included typical percussion instruments as well as some less-traditional options, like a hammer.

“It’s about trains,” he said. “There’s a lot of noise.”

The “Pacific 231” piece particularly stood out.

It’s designed to illustrate the sound of a train starting, traveling and then decelerating.

Eckenrode said the piece was written in the 1920s and is “totally different than what you’ve heard” before. He said it included no key signature and every note was written as an accidental.

Calling it a “very challenging piece of music,” he explained that it’s rarely performed.

The concert was live streamed and is available on YouTube at the Philharmonic’s channel – “Warren Philharmonic” or @warrenphilharmonic1328.

The orchestra’s next performance will be held Mothers Day, May 12, at First Lutheran Church. That concert will feature the Philharmonic’s pianist, Amber Shay Nicholson, performing a Mozard piano concerto.

The annual outdoor concert in conjunction with the Warren County Summer Music School is set for June 27.
