With a focus of hands-on and problem-based learning, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education under the tutelage of instructor Kristen Joblon has taken Sheffield Area High School students to the robotic zoo.

Joblon’s STEM 9 students went above and beyond with their STEM Lab hummingbird kits that allowed them the opportunity to showcase their creativity by building robots out of various materials including lights, sensors, and motors.

After transforming the classroom into a lively zoo setting, the project was enhanced with a focus on collaboration and cross-curriculum interactions by inviting Sheffield Area Elementary School students to take a free tour of their creations. The STEM 9 students took on roles as zookeepers and gift shop workers, dedicating themselves to the project while engaging with Molly Chapman’s first grade class that has been studying circuits by not only offering a tour but also a “Pin Shop” where they created personalized zoo tickets.

This immersive approach, according to Joblon, gave the STEM 9 students valuable hands-on experience in project management and teamwork.

“This project highlights the benefits of our shared STEM lab between the elementary and middle-high school,” said Joblon. “Collaborations like this not only enhance the learning experience for all students but also promote a culture of teamwork and innovation. I am thrilled to see the positive impact of initiatives like these on our school community.”

Joblon said she felt the visit was a huge success, with the younger students being both entertained and educated by the exhibits.
