WCSD, Conewango likely to partner on repairs to Plumber St. bridge

The Warren County School District and Conewango Township appear set to split the cost of repairing the bridge on Plumber Street over to the baseball and softball fields on the other side of Jackson Run.

“Those fields are landlocked,” Jim Grosch, WCSD director of business services said. “Conewango Township reached out to us. There are issues with the planking of the boards” on the bridge.

Grosch said that the township offered to split the cost with the WCSD and requested that students at the Warren County Career Center build the planking that township crews would install.

He called that a “great opportunity for those kids.”

Cost for the work is estimated at $10,000.

Grosch said there are two booster groups working “pretty diligently” to try to have most of the materials donated though that’s not settled yet.

Director of Administrative Support Services Gary Weber said there is a “timeliness” to moving ahead with the project given that the first games in the spring season are scheduled for March 4.

The issue will be up for formal approval at the February board meeting.

“I just want approval to spend up to $5,250 but I don’t think we’re going to come near that,” Weber said.

Board member Dan Sullivan asked how these projects are typically funded to “make it equal” across the schools.

Weber said district staff handle normal maintenance and improvements are typically done through the booster groups.

Grosch said the cost to purchase land and create a new field complex would be $500,000 to $1 million.

The repair cost here is $5,000.

“We thought this would be money very well spent for the betterment of the kids,” he said.
