The Silver Winds Flute Choir will kick off the holiday season with a “Winter Wonders” performance on Sunday.

The concert will be at First Methodist Church, 200 Market St., starting at 4 p.m.

“This performance features selections representing repertoire that is classical, sacred, popular and seasonal,” Becky Darbee said.

The following selections will make up the concert: Boismortier Concerto No. VI, Grieg’s Puck from Lyric Pieces, Gabriel’s Oboe by Morricone, and Chapins children’s song This Pretty Planet.

The Overture from Handel’s Messiah is the first of many seasonal pieces including Victor Herbert’s Toyland and March of the Toys, Do You Hear What I Hear, Mel Torme’s The Christmas Song, Christmas Time is Here as well as selections from Six Carols for Flute Trio and The Most Wonderful Time of the Year by Wyle and Pola.

“This performance features a choir that has grown from five members in 2007 to an expanded flute choir of nine musicians performing on piccolo, C flute, alto and bass flutes,” Darbee said. “Musicians are skilled amateurs, professionals, and teachers all sharing a love of flute music.”

The performers will include Laura Whitten, Jessalyn Peterson-Palmer, Pat Murphy, Becky Darbee, Nancy Scott, Emily Frederick-Rose, Lee Reynolds, Deena Winters and Ellen Scalise.

There’s a wide range of experience that the musicians bring to the table.

Locally, that includes ties to the Warren Philharmonic and Warren Players theater orchestra.

Darbee has performed with choirs and ensembles in Erie and Georgia while Scott has performed with the Connecticut National Guard and Washington DC Army Reserve Band. Winters has played with the Synergy Jazz Band and Salsa Band while many members play in small ensembles in local venues for weddings and receptions.

Darbee added that Peterson-Palmer teaches flute while others “teach privately, perform in church and act as worship music leaders.

“Silver Winds Flute Choir offers two concerts annually: fall/winter and spring,” she added. “Additionally, the choir has performed for a variety of local organizations when available.”

Starting at $3.50/week.
