Commissioners working to improve rec yard security
County officials intend to act on a proposal at a meeting later this week that aims to secure the rec yard at the Warren County Jail.
The commissioners discussed the proposal during Monday’s meeting.
The request for proposals comes in the wake of the escape of Michael Burham’s escape from the jail in July.
Burham utilized a deficiency in a chain link fence to escape from the recreation yard onto the jail roof before scaling the opposite side of the building with a rope made of multiple bed sheets.
Commissioner Jeff Eggleston said that Chief Clerk Pam Matve has crafted a request for proposals to “strengthen (the) security on the prison yard, which is on the top floor.”
He said the work planned would replace the chain link fence while “adding additional security measures to that structure.
The yard can be seen on Google Maps images of the courthouse. The chain link fence is attached to a series of beams that provide the open-air covering for the recreation yard.
The commissioners will look to approve the proposal at Wednesday’s meeting.
Commissioner Tricia Durbin said the process to facilitate the work should be done as “expeditious as we possibly can.”
