Sheffield, WAHS students to see changes
There are changes coming for high school students in the Sheffield and Warren attendance areas, and district officials are providing answers.
Warren County School District has posted answers to an initial group of frequently asked questions regarding the plan to transport Sheffield Area High School students to Warren Area High School for three periods each day and then return them to Sheffield for the remainders of their school days.
The chosen option allows Sheffield students to formally be students of Sheffield Area High School for purposes of class rank, graduation, athletics, and other activities.
Sheffield area students who attend Warren County Career Center will spend their entire days at the Warren campus, but will continue to be Sheffield students in those other ways.
Students who choose to stay at WAHS beyond three periods for additional coursework, become Warren Area High School students in all of those ways.
The three core classes to be delivered include math, English language arts, and science. One teacher in each of those disciplines will move from Sheffield to Warren for the 2023-2024 school year.
Social studies classes will be taught at Sheffield in the afternoon, with the offerings including: U.S. History 1; U.S. History 1 college prep; U.S. History 2 college prep; Modern World History college prep; and American Government/Economics college prep.
“Social Studies is a core course,” according to the FAQ. “However, if SAMHS students took all four cores at WAHS, they would be spending more than half of their day at WAHS and would be considered WAHS students. The three tested cores are being taught at WAHS.”
With respect to transportation, the high school students will be picked up independently of middle and elementary level students, and taken directly to Warren Area High School, without stopping at Sheffield Area Middle High School.
The timing of bus runs for students is likely to change from past years. Exactly what the timing will look like has not been determined.
At the end of the school day, students in grades K through12 will ride the same buses home, as in previous years.
Sheffield area students will eat breakfast at Warren. After their three cores, they will be on the bus from about 10:40 a.m. to 11:10 a.m., and eat lunch at Sheffield before attending fourth through seventh periods there and being dismissed at 3:15 p.m.
The transportation time subsumes time set aside for advisory. As Sheffield high school students need time for clubs, college and career readiness activities, and assemblies, the school will be able to run an activity period schedule.
There are no high school classes nor study halls at Sheffield in the morning. Students may not stay at SAMHS to take courses through the district’s Virtual Academy nor dual enrollment in the morning.
There will be orientation events for students who will be new to WAHS, including all students coming in from Sheffield.
