Commissioners work to update reassessment process

Warren County’s property tax reassessment is well underway.

And now that staff with Vision Government Solutions are out and about with yellow vests and magnets on their cars, the commissioners are getting questions.

The commissioners discussed during Monday’s work session how to spread the word.

Commissioner Tricia Durbin said she’d like to see the county assemble “something informational for people to know and understand,” that Vision is “the firm that we’re using to actually perform the reassessment valuation.

“I know there are those who are very focused and know all about it,” she said, as well as many who do not.

Chief Clerk Pam Matve said there is information on the county’s Facebook page and website regarding the project.

County Solicitor Nathaniel Schmidt said he spoke with the manager for the project, who reported that nearly 1,000 properties have been reviewed in the City of Warren ant that the project is “going really well.”

“I know people have questions,” he added. “The idea to continue outreach is good.”

“It’s not about getting more money,” Commissioner Jeff Eggleston ssaid. “It’s about equity.”

The primary reason for undertaking a countywide reassessment is to ensure a fair and equitable distribution of the tax burden among property owners, according to the commissioners. The reassessment will align property values with current market conditions, leading to a more accurate representation of each property’s worth.

Market values have changed dramatically since the last reassessment, which was completed in the late 1980s. Since then, property values have shifted significantly due to various economic and environmental factors, both across the entire county, and from community to community.

Reassessment will establish an accurate market value for each property, allowing for fair taxation.

HUMAN SERVICES FIRM SELECTED

A consultant has been selected for a project aimed at developing a human services strategic plan for the county.

Eggleston said that HMA is a “pretty robust human services consulting firm” and will assist the county with other “parallel”planning projects.

He said a kick off meeting is set for later this week and the goal is to have the plan completed by October.

Starting at $3.50/week.
