WCSD and county approve resource officer agreement

Warren County and the Warren County School District have come to terms on an agreement that will continue the current School Resource Officer program.

An agreement for the program was approved Monday by the school board and then by the county commissioners.

Sheriff Brian Zeybel said the program originated in 2017 and explained that a 2019 addendum to the contract set the wage scale that is being codified in the agreement.

Per the agreement, that includes the school district paying the county $40 per hour for a full-time deputy and $29 per hour for part-time deputies.

According to the agreement, the runs through June 2025.

Zeybel said it would be revisited at that point.

Both candidates for sheriff in next week’s election have called for expansion of the program.

The text of the agreement outlines the objectives of the program — to “help maintain a safe and secure school environment” as well as “promote positive attitudes regarding the police’s role in society and to help students learn more about the law and the criminal justice systems.”

The SRO program is intended to be a “liaison with school personnel in a cooperative effort to prevent violent and criminal behavior against persons and/or property in school and on School District grounds,” per the agreement.

Starting at $3.50/week.
