The book titles for the annual Cake Boss competition in the Family Consumer Science classes at Warren Area High School were familiar.
Up, Magic Tree House, Rapunzel (Tangled), the Lorax, and Alice in Wonderland were among the inspirations.
When teacher Lewann Alexander started the unit, she asked groups of students decide upon the books they would like to base their cakes on.
Some books were chosen for appearances — the Rainbow Fish, Finding Dory, and Up in particular provided many opportunities for color.
Some — like the Giving Tree and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone — were chosen for their impacts upon the students.

Six lucky judges sampled each of 12 cakes over two periods Thursday.
The groups introduced their cakes, the books that inspired them, and talked about who had done what and why.
The judging rubric included categories for the introduction, the borders, writing, and decorations on the cakes, the taste and overall appearance, and more.
The cake based on the Bible, with team members Ella Ordiway, Georgie Bickling, Aubrey Smith, Bailey Roudybush, and Hailey Peterson, featuring Noah’s Ark and finely printed text from Genesis, earned perfect scores from several of the judges and ended with a 43.58 out of a possible 45 to take first place in the sixth period class and overall.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar Cake took first in fifth period and second overall with an aggregate score of 37.58.
