Concerns raised about antlerless license sales change

Change can often bring confusion.

And there’s potential for some confusion when it comes to antlerless license changes recently announced by the Pennsylvania Game Commission.

For decades, antlerless license sales have been managed through a mail-in process through county treasurer’s offices.

The PGC has now shifted that process online or in-person at its license sale agents.

Warren County Treasurer Denny Munksgard said the PGC will be sending out a mailing to explain the change in process.

He said the change should be a good thing but he’s concerned about a few elements of the transition.

“(I’m) hoping we don’t have the ‘Black Friday Syndrome’ of people standing out waiting to get in the door,” he said.

Munksgard said the state has increased the antlerless allocation in Wildlife Management Unit 2F from 34,000 to 47,000.

He said the WMU isn’t typically sold out until the second round of license sales so there’s no need for people to rush in to ensure they get a tag.

The Commission’s recent action sets the first day of license sales June 26. The sales will be limited to Pennsylvania residents until July 10 and hunters will be restricted to one license in the first round.

A second round, open to residents and non-residents, will open July 24 for any wildlife management units where tags are available.

Munksgard said sales can’t start until 8 a.m. on June 26.

The process of ensuring all the license dealers — treasurer’s office included — has the right paper and printer is underway.

“We would typically sell around 7,000 antlerless licenses,” Munksgard said. “We’re not going to lose a lot of money. Foot traffic could be up.”

One other area where there’s reason for concern is license sales to Amish.

Munksgard said counties used to be able to manually override when someone doesn’t have a Social Security number, like members of the Amish Committee. Now, he said, it’ll require phone calls to get supervisory permission.

“It’s going to be a major change,” he said of the PGC’s shift. “Hopefully each year beyond here will get smoother. Time will tell.
