Odd Fellows help Scout cars get ready to roll

Photo provided to the Times Observer Jim Tellman is one of several Odd Fellows that are helping Scouts get their Pinewood Derby cars ready to roll. “This Saturday is the big Council race where all the Pack winners will compete in each rank, Lion, Tiger, Wolf, Bear and Webelos,” Dussia said.

All the cars will hit the track this weekend for the council-wide scout Pinewood Derby.

But it’s taken many weeks to get to that point.

“The Warren Odd Fellows Lodge on Hickory St. has been an extremely busy place for the past two months,” Lou Dussia said. “The Odd Fellows workshop is also the site where all Cornplanter Council Scouts must bring their cars in to be teched, wheels approved and weighted.”

Dussia said that cars approved are then impounded and then taken to races, which have been held the past several Saturdays in advance of this weekend’s council race.

It has taken some Odd Fellows to get the cars ready to roll — Dussia, Jim Tellman, Al Webster, Lisa Bush and Vern Flinn.

“Almost every evening and weekends several members of the Odd Fellows have been busy helping Scouts and their parents design, construct and finish their pinewood race cars,” Dussia said. “The shop is equipped to do all functions of a build. A design and layout studio allows the scouts to draw the design of the car of their dreams.”

The workshop can make a car happen from beginning to end.

“The shop is designed to assist those scouts whose family does not have the necessary tools and knowledge to build a nice competitive car,” Dussia said.

“This Saturday is the big Council race where all the Pack winners will compete in each rank, Lion, Tiger, Wolf, Bear and Webelos,” Dussia said. “There is also a special race for the scouts who did all the work on their own car with only adult supervision. This is called the Total Scout Build.”

“Some people think this is a boy event,” Dussia said. “Besides the girls in BSA Scouts there is a completely separate race for the Warren County Girl Scouts.”

Starting at $3.50/week.
