Warren captures 4th straight Tri-County title

HERMITAGE — The Warren boys tennis team continued its long-storied success at the annual Tri-County Tournament on Thursday as the Dragons captured their fourth straight team title at Buhl Park.

The Tri-County Tournament features many teams across District 10 and is a warmup for the upcoming District 10 singles, doubles and team championships. This year’s tournament consisted of 10 teams, eight events, and all players from every school were able to participate in events to get points for their teams.

After a three-hour rain delay upon arrival, the Dragons were put to the test. They managed to find themselves in six of the eight finals where they were victorious in four of those six events.The Dragons captured first place with a combined team total of 29 points, with Hickory coming in second with 13.

“This is always a fun day for the kids and one of our favorite events of the year as it shows the depth of our squad and gives our junior varsity guys a chance to really lead the team,” said head coach Thomas Pellegrino. “We won two-thirds of the junior varsity events and managed to have two Warren teams in the fourth-doubles final.”

At first singles, Lucas Thrift finished as runner-up in his bracket, defeating Hickory in Round 1 8-3 and Titusville in Round 2 8-5 before falling to Harbor Creek in the final 8-4.

At second singles, Gabe Dougherty finished as runner-up, defeating Titusville in Round 1 8-3 and Harbor Creek in Round 2 8-7 before falling to Erie in the final 8-3.

Jaxon Thrift won his division at third singles, defeating Erie 8-1 in Round 1, Greenville 8-5 in Round 2 and Harbor Creek 8-6 in the final.

At fourth singles, Bentley Sherry was defeated in the opening round to the eventual finalist from Grove City 8-1

Gaven Mealy and Karson McCollough were the champions of their division at first doubles, defeating Harbor Creek 8-1 in the first round, Sharon 8-2 in the second and Hickory 8-1 in the final.

At second doubles, Bill Bennett and Josh Westover were defeated in the first round 8-7 (8-6).

Grant Newton and Tobiah Reinard were the champions of their division at third doubles, defeating Meadville in Round 1 8-0, Sharon in Round 2 8-1 and Grove City 8-3 in the championship.

Also for Warren, Liam Bailey and Levi Peterson received a walkover in the opening round at fourth doubles, then fell 6-4 to Grove City.

Mateo Madril and Trent Alexander lost to Hickory 6-2 in the opening round.

Lincoln Olsen and Justin Klemowski defeated Hickory in Round 1 6-3 and Erie in Round 2 6-1 before falling in the third round 7-6 (7-4) to Grove City.

Trey Carrington and Luc Wilkins defeated Titusville 6-0 in the first round, Meadville 6-0 in the second round, Grove City 7-5 in Round 3 and Grove City 6-3 in the semifinals, but then were defeated by teammates CJ Archer and Corey Ristau 6-4 in the final.

Ristau and Archer beat Oil City 6-2 in Round 1, Grove City 6-2 in Round 2, Erie 6-1 in the third round and Grove City 6-2 in the semifinals before beating Wilkins and Carrington.

After a loss to Cathedral Prep on Friday afternoon, Warren is now 13-2 overall, and 5-2 in Region 2 play.
