Career Center welcomes students, parents

Over the past week, hundreds of visitors have been through the Warren County Career Center.

In addition to annual ninth-grade visits throughout the week, the center held an open house for parents of current and prospective students on Thursday.

Every ninth-grade class in Warren County School District visited the career center.

“The ninth-grade visits are an opportunity for them to see all the different programs that we offer,” Principal Jim Evers said. “We do it prior to scheduling so they can make better choices.”

“The open house gives parents of students who are enrolled a chance to see the program and the teachers,” Evers said. “It also gives the parents of ninth-graders a chance to see the programs their students are interested in.”

There were 119 adults who visited during the open house.

The tours went well, Evers said. He credited Carrie Smaroff and Warren-Forest Higher Education Council School-to-Work Coordinator Jenny Burroughs for organizing the events and creating hand-outs.

In addition to the career center’s current offerings, the school board and the advisor council are looking into new possibilities.

“We are looking to create an early childhood development program for next year,” Evers said. “We’re exploring oil-field programming. There was some discussion about forestry.

“The student-run First Class Manufacturing is new this year,” he said. “That type of programming has the potential to change how we do what we do. If this is successful, we might be able to incorporate it into some other programs.”
