School district reports smooth first day of classes

The first day of school can be stressful for just about everyone involved.

On Wednesday, Warren County School District reportedly had its smoothest first day in a while.

“The first day went great,” Director of Administrative Support Services Gary Weber said. “The central office administrators were all out in buildings and reported good things.”

“The building administrators planned well for the first day and the teachers and support staff were ready to go,” Weber said. “The building and ground crews and the custodial staff did a great job getting ready this summer as well.”

“The kids were energized when they entered first thing in the morning which was great to see,” he said.

Not everything was perfect.

The district could use some more teachers.

“We are doing all right on staffing,” Weber said. “We have a few open positions still. We had some late resignations that have caused some movement that we are trying to fill.”

The district held some interviews this week and is waiting on paperwork to confirm some new hires.

“We have a lot of positions filled with long-term subs which we’ve done the past few years,” he said.

Retiring teachers were the only group giving late notice.

“We had a number of registrations taking place on the first day of school, but I don’t think it was anything that caused us issues in the buildings,” Weber said. “Central Office has been quite busy getting them registered and in school.”

“Mike Kiehl’s (transportation) department does a great job of getting all of the kids scheduled correctly and communication sent out prior to school,” Weber said.

While Weber said the buses moved in and out more quickly than last year, there were typical first-day transportation problems.

“Only a handful of students were on the wrong bus or missed a stop,” Weber said. “Parents were quickly contacted and students were picked up at the school.”

“WCSD administration and teachers did a really good job on the first day of getting everyone out and home safely,” he said.

“I would say that yesterday was one of the quietest days we’ve had that I can remember, which is a good thing,” Weber said.

Starting at $4.00/week.
