Split verdict returned for assault of CYS worker

A Bear Lake woman has been found guilty in a split verdict stemming from an incident where she assaulted a Children and Youth Services worker.

Jennifer L. Hardy, 38, was charged by Corry-based Pennsylvania State Police back in February with two counts of aggravated assault — one a first-degree felony and one a second-degree felony.

A trial on these allegations was held Wednesday before President Judge Maureen Skerda.

Information from the Warren County District Attorney’s office shows that Hardy was found not guilty of the more serious charge but guilty of the second-degree felony.

Troopers were dispatched to 3506 Route 958 for the reported assault where they first spoke with the caseworker, who told police “she was speaking with the defendant… regarding an open case she has with her.”

She told police that they met in the driveway and “Hardy had an ashtray from her car in her hand.” During the conversation, she “turned her back on Hardy” and “Hardy struck her in the back of the head with the ashtray,” police allege in the affidavit of probable cause.

The caseworker told police that she ran into the house, went into a bedroom and locked the door behind her while Hardy allegedly followed her through another door and “attempted to gain access into the room but was unable to” before fleeing the scene.

Troopers say they observed the laceration “which caused the back of (the victim’s) head to be covered in blood” and that another county employee transported the victim to Warren General Hospital for treatment.

According to the Warren County District Attorney’s office, First Assistant District Attorney Cody Brown prosecuted the case while Hardy was represented by Chief Public Defender Kord Kinney.
