Summer Food program expands to Sheffield

The Warren County School District’s Summer Food program is about to grow.

There are currently sites at Beaty-Warren Middle School and Lacy Playground.

When the program starts up again on Monday, Sheffield is expected to join in with 20 to 25 kids per day.

“We look for partners who are willing to work with us to have satellite programs,” District Coordinator of Grant and Foundation Development Matt Jones said.

When a location approaches the district and is approved, personnel there are trained and then are able to pick up and deliver meals. “The bag lunches are picked by a volunteer or staff member with the partner we are working with,” Jones said. “We train them and they administer the food service on site.”

Bag lunches will be offered at Sheffield Memorial Park from 11:30 to noon Monday through Friday through Aug. 5.

Lacy also offers bag lunches at 11 a.m.

Beaty has breakfast from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. and lunch from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each day.

Beaty is scheduled to stop serving lunches on July 29, but may continue through Aug. 5, according to Jones.

With Sheffield opening and the district’s 21st Century Program starting next week, Jones expects the number of meals serve to pick up.

There is no registration required, but advance notice is appreciated.

“With summer food, if you are a child under the age of 18, you will get served a free meal,” Jones said. “You have to eat it on-site and you can’t take food off-site.”

“The only thing that becomes somewhat important, if you go to Sheffield or Lacy, it’s best if you can figure out a way to let them know you’re coming,” he said. “It helps out the site staff.”

The district is reimbursed for the program by the U.S. Department of Agriculture through the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

Starting at $3.50/week.
