Local volunteers aid in search for missing woman

The search for a missing Meadville woman has been going on for a week — and on Friday, it was time to bring in help from Warren County.
Candice Caffas, 34, was last seen Saturday, July 16, in Conneaut Lake.
Hundreds of people have been involved in the search for her.
Warren County Public Safety Director Ken McCorrison received a text message on Thursday asking if he could find some people to contribute.
“I got a text message from the deputy director of Crawford County Public Safety,” McCorrison said. “We’ve been at this for days. We could use a hand.”
McCorrison reached out to fire chiefs across the county.
“Some fire departments really stepped up,” he said. “We put some quality teams together.”
The Cherry Grove, Clarendon, Glade, Sheffield, Spring Creek, and Youngsville departments, as well as Public Safety, all sent people to the effort.
Distance was no object for the teams from the eastern part of the county. “Those guys always step up,” McCorrison said. “Searches is what they do.”
About 15 participants from Warren County were among about 75 searchers on Friday.
“It wasn’t just fire departments,” McCorrison said. “They had civilians there, law enforcement. They had a few drones. A State Police helicopter. The State Police mounted division out of Hershey — they’re a solid team.”
Among the county equipment used in the search were ATVs, UTVs, and a privately-owned drone that the county uses when it is needed.
The searches met at Vernon Central Fire Department in Meadville for a briefing, then “we went out and did some searching,” McCorrison said.
Organizers of the search set the teams out on a grid pattern through woods, creek bottoms and open corn fields.
“We worked those patterns,” he said.
The Warren County crews started searching around 11 a.m. and set out for home after 5 p.m.
Caffas was not found during that time. “To the best of my knowledge, it was unsuccessful,” McCorrison said.
But, he hopes that the efforts by Warren County searchers allowed Crawford County searchers a break and a chance to refresh their efforts.
“They’ve been at this for days and it’s been in the 90s,” he said. “They needed some extra hands.”
“We were happy that we were able to come out and give those guys a break and help them out,” he said. “That’s what it’s all about, helping your neighbors.”
The Crawford County Public Safety Facebook page has information for any individuals who are interested in assisting.
There has been no formal request for additional agency support from the county. But, that support is available.
“With agencies, we wait for a request,” McCorrison said. “They haven’t asked.”
“If they text me, I’ll find them more crews,” he said. “We’ve got to remember, this is somebody’s daughter, somebody’s granddaughter.”
