Pickleball courts back before council

The Warren City Council has agreed to the construction of pickleball courts at Betts Park.

But that doesn’t mean there still aren’t issues to work out with the Warren Pickleball Club.

The club approached the council this week asking for assistance on costs to cover a legal opinion as well as engineering and inspection fees. The legal opinion addressed the propriety of the city leasing the court space to the club during construction.

Councilman Maurice Cashman said it was his recollection that the club would raise the “full cost of the pickleball court” with no cost to the city.

“Now we see this sitting in front of us for money we do not have in the budget,” he said.

Jon Marti said these were fees that the club was not aware of “that council might include or incur at its request.”

City Manager Nancy Freenock said she is working with Marti on an agreement that aims to save some of the legal fees.

Cashman asked if the expense the club is asking for has already been incurred.

“Yes we have,” Freenock said.

Councilman John Wortman questioned whether spending those funds should have gone before the council first.

Freenock said the council did approve the costs.

Department of Public Works Director Mike Holtz said the inspector is usually a city employee or the city engineer and that the items would normally be covered by the city.

The council declined to make a motion to entertain covering the costs.

Starting at $4.00/week.
