DEP considering amended mining permit in Pittsfield

The Department of Environmental Protection is considering an amended mining permit for an operation northwest of Pittsfield.

A permit revision was filed by Allegheny Aggregate Inc., according to a legal notice published in the Times Observer.

“The revision proposes an amendment of 21.5 acres which increases the existing permit areas from 108.6 to 130.1 acres,” the notice states. “A permit revision is also requested that proposes mining of sand and gravel beneath the groundwater table for approximately 30 feet and thus creating a lake which is considered a postmining land use of an ‘unmanaged water impoundment.'”

The location is described as in Pittsfield Township north of the intersection of US 6 and Miles Hill Road.

The notices states that the lake created by mining operations is “not anticipated to discharge.”

“Topsoil removal as well as sand and gravel removal are proposed as part of this surface mine permit,” it says.

A copy of the permit is available at the Warren County Conservation District and comments of objections to the permit should be sent to the DEP Knox Mining Office within 30 days of the last notice publication, which was March 11.
