Comment offered to council on proposal
Many public information sessions and meetings were held as the roundabout at the corner of Market St. and Pennsylvania Ave. It was debated and ultimately approved several years ago.
But people still have questions.
John Hanna raised concerns about several issues such as the impact to CVS and stressed that the impacts on merchants in the area had not been considered.
“I know why this roundabout was voted in. I find it disgraceful,” Pam Lewis said.”I find it utterly disgraceful for our town to consider wasting that much money to do something that the vast majority of people not only don’t want…. (I) certainly hope it can be undone.”
Pauline Steinmyer said she reviewed all the articles on the issue in advance of Monday and said that “it’s more clear looking in hindsight” how the decision came to be.
She said it’s her conclusion that Monday’s work session stems from a desire to rescind the decision “or to essentially say ‘No, we don’t want it anymore.'”
Steinmyer said that is “going to be very costly…. It’s going to be very costly no matter what we do. If in fact we say to PennDOT ‘We really don’t want this’ we are going to have to reimburse.” She said there are likely also “legal issues as well.”
“PennDOT has gone way beyond any possible expectations we could have had,” she said. “(I’m) wondering if what we have to do is make it the very best roundabout that we can and try to make it work.”
Questions were also raised about who is actually in support of the roundabout as well as collision data and whether traffic backs up at the intersection currently.
