School district to purchase wifi routers for buses
Doing homework on the bus could have a different look soon in the Warren County School District.
On Monday, the school board approved a motion to authorize the purchase of wifi routers for use on school buses.
According to Superintendent Amy Stewart, that service would be available on some buses — particularly those on which students travel the longest. “Those miles could be more valuable,” she said.
The district will utilize federal dollars for the project.
“We wrote for several projects,” Stewart said. “Fiber build-outs through the community (was one). This is another… to get wifi on some of our buses.”
The Warren County School District isn’t the only one with its eyes on this particular prize.
“The equipment is going fast,” Stewart said. “We’d like to be able to get our hands on this equipment.”
The board approved the expenditure of $344,155, as such time as the dollars are approved and available, for the equipment.
The board considered a new policy, based on state law, that would detail how students are dealt with in cases where one student is convicted of sexual assault against another district student.
The policy does not deal with a strictly hypothetical situation. “This happens,” Stewart said. “This is not unheard of for us… to have an alleged and a victim in the same place.”
According to the policy, the involved students would be not remain in the same building, with the convicted student being the one displaced.
The convicted student could be expelled, transferred to an alternative education program, or reassigned to another school or educational program within the district.
The members unanimously approved the first reading.
Board member Arthur Stewart pointed out that the policy, which aligns with and is guided by state policy, represents an unfunded mandate, as the district could be required to transport a student out of his or her home attendance area as a result.
